Sam Patania
As a third-generation silversmith, I have been driven by my passion for jewelry for over 43 years. I have received numerous awards and honors throughout my career, including my induction into the Smithsonian, where a piece of my work now resides alongside works by my father and grandfather. Most recently, my family and I were awarded the Shemer Honors, a testament to our dedication to craftsmanship and artistry.
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to share my knowledge by teaching jewelry classes. During these sessions, I noticed the significant time artisans spent producing stone mounts and bezels, elements often overlooked by customers. Inspired by my commitment to elevate this crucial stage of jewelry making, I created Sam's Simple Mounts.
My goal was to design a mount with a clean aesthetic that complements each stone, intuitive enough for beginners yet high-quality enough for seasoned experts. The journey began with handcrafting the first mounts, followed by extensive trial-and-error to create a product that accommodates calibrated stones. I aimed to identify the optimal height to securely hold both high-domed and flatter stones, ensuring versatility without compromising on quality.
In collaboration with a close friend with CAD and benchwork experience, we developed a design that ensures consistent production. Each mount is crafted as a single solid piece, providing strength and durability for everyday wear. We use premium sterling silver, and every bezel is inscribed with its size to eliminate confusion. Additionally, our designs include two jump rings for easy attachment to chains or French hooks, and they can be removed for soldering onto larger pieces.
